Ramona
Quimby Directed by Jeanne Klein |
The play Ramona Quimby is taken from a series of childrens books by Beverly Cleary. The set is based on one of the original Ramona stories. While in kindergarden Ramona learned to write her name. Her teacher explained that the letter Q was just like the letter O, but with a tail. Ramona, being the imaginative girl she is, thought that if the letter Q has a tail, it should also have ears and wiskers as a cat does! The set I designed for Ramona's living room is a representation of a cat's head and the cursive letter Q. |
This is a painting I did for the show. In it you can see the settings for Mrs. Kemp's living room, Ramona's living room, and Aunt Bea's apartment. |
The final scene of the play takes place at a resturant called the Whopperburger. This is Ramona's favorite place to eat not just because the food is good, but because it is a lot of fun too. The design team pictured an elaborate themed resturant similar to Bullwinkle's or Chuck E Cheese's for this scene. We chose a construction site theme because Ramona's favorite books were about trucks and steam shovels. So, the set for the scene is a place where giant burgers are constructed. |
Everyone wore hard hats and the food was brought to the table in toy wheelbarrows. To find out more about the offbeat history of this set visit The Whopperburger Page |
