The play Cloud 9 by Caryl Churchill
contrasts changing climates of sexual expression, explores the roles of men and
women, and examines what constitutes a marriage and a family. Act one takes
place in Africa during the Victorian period. I wanted a design that would play
up the absurdity of this male dominated world. |

In act two the same characters are placed
in present day England. Below is the stage I designed. After doing several
sketches of park playgrounds I developed the idea that the set could be a place
where the characters could tangibly work on their sexual identity. The basic
shapes of the playground are taken from the man and woman symbols. Here the
characters could build symbolic representations of their relationships in the
script. |

The image above is an example of what
models in 3D Studio look like before I add lighting effects. What you see here
is a generic "world lighting" with arbitrary shading and no cast shadows. |
